Ann and Marvin Hunt started House Rent Records in 2012, like so many other artists, so that they could release music from their band, the House Jumpers, to their Kansas City region in the Midwest. After a series of releases, their interests grew musically and socially. They enjoyed the zydeco/cajun music of a duo named Zydeco Tougeau (ZTG), which had played on the street corner in downtown Lawrence, Kansas for more than 10 years. It seemed natural for the Hunts to invite ZTG onto the House Rent label. At the same time, the Hunts’ interest grew musically and, with more difficulty booking bands with the pandemic of 2020, they created their duo, With a Twist (WAT). WAT allowed the Hunts to release American standards and an eclectic blend of songs they have written that did not fit the House Jumpers repertoire. It also allowed them to play outdoor performances which were not as suitable for the band.
House Rent Records formed a team of area artists and insightful associates to guide its activities into a new era of expansion, community support, and artistic development. This team meets to discuss opportunities to help rural and urban communities to connect and grow mutual artistic and economic projects.
We hope that our future includes bringing new talent onboard the label which will expand our diversity of music and people. Artists will be carefully selected based on their interest in joining with our mission and values.
Our Mission
We support area musicians by identifying and helping those, who have a strong musical identity, to take the next professional step, by archiving and connecting their music to broader audiences. Another dimension of this mission includes contributing resources to selected causes in our community.
Our Vision
We contribute resources to community causes while increasing interest in musical artistry. We create opportunities for musicians and communities to grow together and share artistic vision, including community development, expanded musical understanding and appreciation, and support for those in need of basic nutrition and societal acceptance. These actions lead to sustainability for those involved.
